As part of our Science topic on Evolution and Inheritance, Year 6 investigated Charles Darwin's research into natural selection and survival of the fittest.

Each group was given a bird 'beak' and different kinds of food (lentils, sunflower seeds, marshmallows, sweets) which they had to get into their bird stomachs.

From this we discovered which 'beaks' were more suited to which type of food. We concluded that the birds with those beaks would have survived and been able to reproduce whereas the birds with the other beaks would not have survived.

This then led us to talk about how animals have evolved to suit the environment that they live in.
