Key information
Yearly Overview and Timetable Nursery
Key Days:
Monday: Nursery visit our school forest for their weekly Forest School Session. We provide all weather suits and wellies.
Tuesday: Library book changing day. The children will take library books home to be returned the following Tuesday.
Friday: P.E session. Please ensure that children wear P.E kits on a Friday.
Please ensure your child has a named water bottle and that all items of uniform are clearly labelled. It is also useful if your child has a spare set of clothes or a couple of sets of clothes to either keep in nursery or to come in with them each day.
Phonics
We follow the Red Rose Phonics scheme, as do classes throughout school. Phonics in nursery focuses on Phase 1 phonics, this is divided into seven aspects and supports the development of children’s speaking and listening skills.
Aspect 1 – Environmental Sounds
The aim of this aspect is to raise children’s awareness of the sounds around them and to develop their listening skills. A suggested activity might be to go on a listening walk and talk about the different sounds you can hear.
Aspect 2 – Instrumental sounds
This aspect aims to develop children’s awareness of sounds made by various instruments. Activities include playing a variety of instruments.
Aspect 3 – Body percussion
The aim of this aspect is to develop children’s awareness of sounds and rhythms. This can be done through singing songs and action rhymes.
Aspect 4 – Rhythm and rhyme
This aspect aims to develop children’s awareness of rhythm and rhyme in speech. This can be done through listening to rhyming stories, and one of our favourite games, clapping out the syllables in words.
Aspect 5 – Alliteration
The focus is on the initial sounds of words. I-Spy type games are perfect for developing this skill.
Aspect 6 – Voice sounds
The aim is to distinguish between different vocal sounds and to begin oral blending and segmenting.
Aspect 7 – Oral blending and segmenting
The main aim is to develop oral blending and segmenting skills. For example breaking down the word Dog into individual sounds D/O/G and blend together to create the whole word.
Phonics at Home:
Please see the link below for a taste of Phase 1 Phonics. If you wish to support your child with Phase 1 Phonics at home, you can find useful interactive games here.
All of the Colours of the Rainbow
Last half term we have enjoyed getting to know the children and supporting them in learning the routines. We started off the year with the topic 'All of the Colours of the Rainbow'. We have looked at focus stories 'Wow! Said the Owl' and 'The Colour Monster'. The children have had lots of fun learning colours and colour names, experimenting with colour and colour mixing, matching and sorting colours and much more!
