Subject Statement Of Intent

At Banks St Stephen’s CE Primary School it is our intent to nurture and develop the whole child. We strive for all of our children to be Primary Literate Pupils. The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

We are extremely proud of our school library. All children visit the library once a week with their teachers to read and exchange books.

Phonics and Reading Schemes

At Banks St. Stephen's we follow the Red Rose Phonics scheme starting from Nursery to Y2 and beyond for those who still need phonics teaching.  We use Phonics Tracker to assess and monitor pupils' learning of phonics.

We use Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cats as our main reading schemes. These have have been organised into phonics phases in EYFS and KS1 to fit in with the teaching of the Red Rose phonics scheme.

We use the John Murray guided reading scheme - Reading Rocketeers in EYFS & KS1 and Reading Explorers in KS2.
